Hello: I want to build a DIY PC with an ASUS ROG Strix Z270I Gaming Motherboard and 32GB DDR4 RAM and 2TB SSD, I tried to install Windows 2016 Datacenter server with desktop experience. The information about ASUS ROG Strix Z270I Gaming Motherboard can be found here: The installation went rather well, but until the server is up and running I found the issue, there is no network driver available for the network adapter on the motherboard. I have tried to download the only one network adapter from the manufacture’s web site: However, this driver is not working in Windows 2016 Datacenter server, the driver is for Windows 10. I have tried the following: look at the device manager about the network adapter, I got the information about network controller is: Device type: Network adapters Manufacturer: Qualcomm Atheros Communications Inc.

Location: PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0 Device status: Reinstall the drivers for this device. (Code 18) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver. If I click “Reinstall Driver ” and let OS to search my the USB key, where I downloaded the network adapter for Windows 10. I got the error message: Windows was unable to install your Network Controller. Please advice what I should do to install driver for network adapter. Or, if not possible, can I install other network adapter on the motherboard, so I can use another network adapter; the motherboard comes with some WiFi device, but I don’t like this, since my WiFi is not stable, it is on and off all the time; but the wired network is very stable, for more than one year, it has down time less than 4 hours. Please help, Thanks, John.

Please let me know if I buy one listed in the above list and insert it in the motherboard, then I can reinstall Windows 2016 Server, it should work, right? The chipset is the link between the OS and mobo integrated devices like USB, network, graphics, pci bus, etc. So it sounds like it may not work.

I'd try asking in the dell forums or possibly try installing it as a virtual machine. They can help you with that path over here.

Hello: Thank you for your advice, I have copied the zip file into a USB key and inserted the USB key in the new PC, where I installed Windows 2016 datacenter version.

From Device Manager, I have tried to unistall or disable the Network Controller, and tried to update the driver for the device, Windows showed me the following error: Update Driver Software - Unknown Device Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A Wireless Network Adapter A service installation section in this INF is invalid. If you know the manufacture of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software.

It seems Windows 2016 has support for a similar device, but not exactly the same device. However, find out how to change the installation section in the INF file could be tough. Please advice what I should do.

Thanks, John. Hello: At first, I tried to install the chipset by running AsusSetup.exe, but it did not work, error message: Does not support this Operating System: WINT10.0I64 Later, I found there is anther exe: SetupChipset.exe, so I run it, it seems OK, and I rebooted my PC according to the request. However, after rebooting, when I tried to scan for new changes in hardware from device manager, I only see the old information, the device is not working, the yellow exclamation mark.

Driver

I even bought an Ethernet Network USB Adapter by Digitus (USB 2.0), as Windows 2016 has built in support for USB Ethernet adapter, but the device is simply not there. I will try to reinstall OS, but I don't think it will help.

Ethernet Adapter For Windows 7

But I am thinking about buy a new PCI-E Ethernet adapter, I can see from Windows 2016 Hardware compitable list, there are some 200 NIC Ethernet adapters are working with Windows 2016 Server. Some list is here: Please let me know if I buy one listed in the above list and insert it in the motherboard, then I can reinstall Windows 2016 Server, it should work, right? Thanks, John. Hello: I finally give up Windows 2016 and install Windows 10 Enterprise version. After the installation, OS could not find the NIC, I had to run SetupChipset.exe which I downloaded from the web site as I did for Windows 2016 server, and reboot my PC, after reboot, the network is working. I can see the network controller is: Intel Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V But the information is rather misleading.

I think the biggest issue for Windows 2016 server not working on the hardware is: the SetupChipset.exe is not compitable with OS. However, for the same hardware, Windows 10 works, Windows 2016 server is not working, this is not a good way for using the hardware. Thanks for your help.
